Don’t Be a Gossip

Don’t Be a Gossip

One of my biggest pet peeves is hearing gossip. I believe Eleanor Roosevelt had the best quote when it comes to being a gossip. She said “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people”. Gossip is talking about people and rarely in a positive light. What is it that makes small minded people want to spread bad news or rumors about another human being?

Even our own American media speaks about people over events and ideas. Americans seem to love when someone famous or in power falls from grace. There is always someone ready to pile-on another person’s mistakes or transgressions. Whether it is a politician, an athlete or an actor, small minded folks can’t wait to get on Facebook or Twitter and throw in their valuable two cents or gossip about another person. Why don’t they understand their remarks say way more about themselves than their opinion of that other person’s issues?

It’s not just famous people being gossiped about, but family, co-workers, neighbors and so-called friends are trashed by the small minded folks daily as well. Does trashing or gossiping about someone else elevate their mood or status? I hope not, that is a sad existence if it is true.

Even our so-called entertainment is based around gossip. These “reality” television shows about people’s last names, or housewives or dating shows are just pure garbage TV with high ratings. People tune in to watch bad things happening to good people all in the name of entertainment. I tried watching one of these shows and 5 minutes in I could feel my IQ dropping. It is just sick.

I know we will never be able to change this behavior in small minded folks, but we can stop it from becoming an epidemic and stop the spread ourselves. Don’t be a “Typhoid Mary” and leave gossip to die a slow painful death with those that try to spread it. Life is just too short and precious. Be positive, be smart and be kind!

“The only time people dislike gossip is when you gossip about them.”—Will Rogers
